An Ode to the Unmatched Energy of New York City

It hits you as soon you walk up the Subway steps or exit Penn Station to join the mass of humanity on one of the world’s most densely populated islands. The unmatched rush, energy, and go-go nature of the greatest city in the world: New York City. I’ve been to other major cities from Istanbul to Paris to Mexico City to Sao Paulo and nothing catches the energy of New York City, especially Manhattan, the city’s main thoroughfare and unofficial heart. Yes, a lot of cities have a fast-paced environment, but they don’t match the sheer intensity of what NYC brings to the table.

As someone from New York State originally, Long Island to be specific, there’s nowhere else in the state or in the United States like New York City. People walk faster, talk faster, and are in a hurry to get to someplace from somewhere else. They tell it like it is and don’t make any apologies for it and I’ve always loved that about the city that Never Sleeps. I’m a believer that certain places give off a particular vibe or energy and being in NYC feels like untapped or untamed potential to sum it up. There is a constant feeling of hustle and ambition here reflected in the people, the food, the lifestyle, and the overall culture.

For someone not used to New York City who may be coming from Montana or Kansas or North Dakota, I would imagine it is like being dropped on an alien planet if you’ve never been exposed to that kind of environment before. It would be the same as dropping someone from NYC on a rural farm or a backwater town with few inhabitants. There’s an acclimation period that takes some time for any visitor or tourist to get used to at first. You must get used to picking up the pace, moving faster, and embracing the city’s unique energy rather than pushing back against it.

I love New York City particularly because like many major cities, there’s always something to do, somewhere to be, or someone to see. If someone tells you that they are bored and they live in New York City, tell them they’re crazy and shake your head in disbelief. It’s a city that has lifetimes worth of things to discover, places to go, and the diversity of its inhabitants can’t be replicated anywhere in the world with hundreds of languages represented.

The only downside for newcomers and visitors is that it’s hard to sit still with how fast-paced the vibe is and the energy that rushes through you to explore and see more can drain you quickly. If you visit the Big Apple, you must pace yourself, try not to overdo it, and make sure to leave some time to rest. The smorgasbord of museums, restaurants, cultural centers, and other activities can leave oneself exhausted and broke by the end of just a day of tourism or sightseeing. Pace yourself and your wallet especially because New York City can chew you up and spit you out if you don’t respect the energy, the hustle, or the sheer number of things to do each day.

Best of all though, it feels cinematic as you walk through the city streets, gaze up at the tallest skyscrapers in the country and in the Western Hemisphere and feel like a true main character in a walkable, bikeable, public transit-friendly behemoth of a city. While New York City is smaller by population compared to New Delhi in India and also smaller in total size compared to Beijing, China, other 21st century world capitals that rival NYC in terms of global importance, NYC’s more than 500-year history of immigration, embracing of diversity, and endless stories of rebirth, reinvention, and renewal truly make it a capital of the world in 2026 and beyond.

As Alicia Keys once wrote and sang in the song ‘Empire State of Mind’ with Brooklyn-born and raised rapper Jay-Z, “these streets will make you feel brand new, Big lights will inspire you, Let’s hear it for New York!” I couldn’t agree more that the streets of the Big Apple will inspire you to dream bigger, live larger, and embrace the New York state of mind without reservation. There’s no better city in the world in my honest view where you can have such vibrant energy as soon as you step off the plane, walk out of the subway, or exit your car in search of your next dream to take hold of. New York City is a special city in the world and will always be so. I encourage you to visit, spend some time, don’t go broke, but also consider living there at least once in your life if the stars align. It’s the city so nice they named it twice for a reason!
